Surah Al-Tahrim (A problematic surah)

So I have been reading the Quran and its translation religiously. Of course there are some good teachings in its message. Some of the verses are easy to understand and so are bit hard. Some make no sense at all like Alif, La, Mim, etc

Anyway surah Tahrim particularly caught m y attention. I do not have a hard copy of Tafsir, so I tried the online version. From my understanding the story goes that the prophet was supposed to be at wife Hafsa's house for the night. (It was Hafsa's turn) Upon reaching the house, Hafsa asked the prophet permission to go and visit her parents, which he granted. The propeht then called upon Mariyah, who is a slave girl, and spent the night with her.

Hafsah came to know about this and was very upset with the prophet. The prophet wanted to calm the situation down so he promised her that he was going to make it haram for him to sleep with slave girls. Hafsah then goes to the other wives of the prophet and spread the news to them all. Now the prophet has to deal with other wives and come up with a good explanation. Thats when a convenient revelation comes from Jibreel.

The revelation says why has Muhammad made something haram which Allah has made halal. It goes on to say that if the wifes keep nagging the prophet, then the prophet will divorce them all and that Allah, the angels, jinns, and all believing muslims will be on the side of Muhamamd and support him, and that Allah will provide for him better wives, both virgins and previously married ones.

I have a lot of trouble with this story. I do not see any moral lessons that can be learnt from this revelation. There is nothing in it which mankind can benefit from. Of course it comes very handy for the prophet under the situation he was in.

Anyway, I did read a lot about this particular revelation. I had to read the non-muslim accounts as well to get a fair and balanced explanation.

I found this explanation given on Youtube very unbiased. This man tries to show that there are 2 contented explanations given in the tafsirs and he explains both. That is very impressive research considering he cites from various different tafsirs. I will post the link here.

Now, for your reference here is the surah.

1. O Prophet! Why do you ban (for yourself) that which Allâh has made lawful to you, seeking to please your wives? And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

2. Allâh has already ordained for you (O men), the dissolution of your oaths. And Allâh is your Maula (Lord, or Master, or Protector, etc.) and He is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.

3. And (remember) when the Prophet (SAW) disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives (Hafsah), so when she told it (to another i.e. 'Aishah), and Allâh made it known to him, he informed part thereof and left a part. Then when he told her (Hafsah) thereof, she said: "Who told you this?" He said: "The All-Knower, the All-Aware (Allâh) has told me".

4. If you two (wives of the Prophet SAW, namely 'Aishah and Hafsah turn in repentance to Allâh, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet SAW likes), but if you help one another against him (Muhammad SAW), then verily, Allâh is his Maula (Lord, or Master, or Protector, etc.), and Jibrael (Gabriel), and the righteous among the believers, and furthermore, the angels are his helpers.

5. It may be if he divorced you (all) that his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you, Muslims (who submit to Allâh), believers, obedient to Allâh, turning to Allâh in repentance, worshipping Allâh sincerely, fasting or emigrants (for Allâh's sake), previously married and virgins.

There is a lot of information about the context in which this surah was revealed and the tafsir explanation in this site. The link is below. If anyeone has a different explanation for the revelation of this bizzare surah then I will be interested in hearing it.

Stoning to death in Islam. Peace?

Iran executes two men by stoning

Two men convicted of adultery have been stoned to death in Iran, a rare punishment that the Iranian judiciary says it is trying to have scrapped. The stoning took place in Mashhad in December, said judiciary spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi confirming press reports.

In stonings, men are buried to the waist and stones are hurled until they die. Women are buried to the shoulders.

A third man, an Afghan national, managed to dig himself out of the hole, and therefore escaped execution.

In 2002, Iran's judiciary chief issued a directive imposing a moratorium on execution by stoning and it has been scrapped in the new draft penal code which has yet to be passed into law.
Several stoning sentences are said to have been suspended or commuted, and the last reported execution by stoning was in July 2007.
International and local human rights groups have long campaigned for a ban on stoning in Iran as a "grotesque" punishment which is designed increase the suffering of the condemned.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7826018.stm

Volume 2, Book 23, Number 413: Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar : The Jew brought to the Prophet a man and a woman from amongst them who have committed (adultery) illegal sexual intercourse. He ordered both of them to be stoned (to death), near the place of offering the funeral prayers beside the mosque."

What happens in Stoning? In stoning to death, the victims's hands are tied behind their backs and their bodies are put in a cloth sack. Then, this human "package" is buried in a hole, with only the victims heads showing above the ground. If its a woman, she is buried upto her shoulders. This is to give her an seemingly equal (but nonetheless impossible) chance to escape recognizing her lesser physical strength. After the hapless individual has been secured in the hole, people start chanting "Allah hu Akbar" (meaning, God is great), and throw palm sized stones at the head of the victim from a certain distance (a circle is drawn). The stones are thrown until the person dies or until he/she escapes out of the hole and crosses the circle. Escaping is impossible, given that the individual's hands are tied behind their backs and they are buried in a hole upto their necks or shoulders (in the case of males and females respectively).Naturally, the procedure is extremely barbaric and bloody.

I am absolutely convinced we cannot have Islam in any civilized society. The syariah laws are cruel and barbaric. No wonder muslims are hated all over the world today. It is becuase we are a bunch of hooligans ready to kill and slith throats and do all sorts of barbaric activities to please god. I dont think we are worshipping the real god. My doubts are getting confirmed. Muhammad was not a prophet and he fooled us all for his own benefit. How can a god order things like beheading, stoning to death and hand amputation? This is disgusting. I beg all my muslim friends to please reconsider what you worship. Please pray to god to show you the right way. To show you the right path and to help you differentiate the wrong path. Maybe the real god decided to not reveal himself in any religion. Maybe all religions are false. What ever the case may be, one this is sure. No real god will ask us to kill another human being in this manner by stoning to death.

Why people leave Islam?

I have always wanted to know what motivates people to leave Islam. What are teh reasons why the ex-muslims have now renounced Islam. I find the testimony of Ali Sina, an Iranian muslim very interesting. He has a website about his views on Islam and the site has attracted a lot of other muslims who have doubts about the truth of Islam. What I have found out after reading many other testimonies of muslims who have left Islam is that people leave Islam for various reasons.

Some of them leave Islam for emotional reasons. They may have been psychologically or physically hurt by some law in Islam, or by individuals who claim to be muslims, or who are truly muslim. Eg: women in particular may find it unacceptable to deal with Islam if her husband took a second, third or fourth wife. Or when a husband regularly beat her up and justify his action based on the verse in Qur'an.

Some people attach a lot of importance to science and they find that Islam is not compatible with modern science. This I can understand because all religions have a certain amount of supernatural part that I also find troubling. A lot of educated people tend to fall in this category of ex-muslims who doubts based on scienctific incompatibility of Islam such as creation of Adam and Eve, Noah's flood etc . these accounts as recorded in islamic history do not agree with science.

Certain other ex-muslims are disturbed by Islamic terrorism which is justified by the several verses in the Qur'an that deal with Jihad. Or Islamic hudud laws like cutting hands, beheading, stoning to death, killing of people who leave Islam etc

I want to quote the testimony posted by Ali Sina. It is very interesting. You can read full account of it from his own website. The link is below.

I am often asked, Why I left Islam? As absurd as it may be, some Muslims cannot even allow themselves to think that leaving Islam is an option, or even possible. They rather think that those who leave Islam are paid Jewish agents than accept the fact that people have freedom to think and some may even think that Islam is not for them. The following are my reasons:

Until few years ago I used to think that my faith in Islam was not based on blind imitation but rather was the result of years of investigation and research. The fact that I had read a lot of books on Islam, written by people whose thoughts I approved of and delving into philosophies that were within my comfort zone, emphasized my conviction that I had found the truth. All my biased research confirmed my faith. Just like other Muslims I used to believe that to learn about anything one has to go to the source. Of course the source of Islam is the Quran and the books written by Muslim scholars. Therefore, I felt no need to look elsewhere in order to find the truth, as I was convinced that I have already found it. As Muslims say "Talabe ilm ba'd az wossule ma'loom mazmoom". The search of knowledge after gaining it is unnecessary.

Now I realize this was a mistake. What if we want to learn the truth about one of these dangerous cults? Is it enough to depend only on what the cult leader and his deluded followers say? Wouldn't it be prudent to widen our research and find out what other people have to say about them? Going to the source makes sense only in scientific matters, because scientists are not "believers". They do not say something because they have blind faith. Scientists make a critical analysis of the evidence. It is very much different from religious approach that is based entirely on faith and belief.I suppose it was my acquaintance with the western humanistic values that made me more sensitive and whetted my appetite for democracy, freethinking, human rights, equality, etc. It was then that when I reread the Quran I came across injunctions that were not on a par with my newfound humanistic values, I was distressed and felt uncomfortable to read teachings like these:

Q.3:90 But those who reject Faith after they accepted it, and then go on adding to their defiance of Faith,- never will their repentance be accepted; for they are those who have gone astray.

Q.16: 106 Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.

One may think that the dreadful penalty mentioned here pertains to the next world. But Muhammad made sure that these people received their penalty in this world as well:

Q 9.14 Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame, help you (to victory) over them, heal the breasts of Believers,

....contd....

Tolerant Islam and intolerant Muslims

Since I put up this blog, there has been a lot of comments, especially from Malaysia. Some of the comments posted are downright vulgar and offensive. I do not moderate the comments because I believe in freedom of specch, expression and conscience.

If you are offended by my views, you do not have to read further. Relief is only a click away. But you are not welcome to post rude, insulting, threatening posts, or posts inciting violence. Any future posts made with such intent will not be tolerated. I will pursue to prosecute you for hate speech and threat of violence to the full extent of law according to the jurisdiction of your country of residence.

Please be warned once again that you are not welcome to post vulgar, inappropriate comments or comments of threatening nature/inciting violence.

Now I really have to ask myself, if Islam is the religion of peace, why are my muslim friends so violent and intolerant of opposing views. Why so much hate?

Relationship with a minor (Ayesha case)

Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: "Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old."

Narrated Aisha: "The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Alright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.

Aisha(ra) said, “I used to play with dolls in the presence of the Prophet (pbuh), and my girlfriends used to play along with me. Whenever, Allaah's Messenger (pbuh) would enter, they would hide from him. So he called them to play with me.” In the classical commentary on Saheeh al-Bukhaare entitled Fat-h al-Baaree, Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalaanee wrote the following: “This hadeeth is used as evidence for the permissibility of making dolls and toys with human and animal forms for the purpose of girls playing with them. This category has been specifically excluded from the general prohibition against making images. ‘Iyaad stated this to be categorically so and related that it was the position of the majority of scholars. He further related that they permitted the selling of toys for girls in order to train them from their youth in their household affairs and in dealing with their children…”

“My mother came to me while I was being swung on a swing between two branches and got me down. My nurse took over and wiped my face with some water and started leading me. When I was at the door she stopped so I could catch my breath. I was brought in while Muhammad was sitting on a bed in our house. My mother made me sit on his lap. The other men and women got up and left. The Prophet consummated his marriage with me in my house when I was nine years old. Neither a camel nor a sheep was slaughtered on behalf of me.”

Muhammad(pbuh)- truth about our prophet

This is what our "beloved" prophet of Islam, prophet Muhammad(pbuh)was like. This is according to study and research about the prophet done by some ex-muslim scholars on Islam and comparative religion. Now how much of this I believe, I dont know. But my faith is Islam is shattered. I cannot hide it. It is better to be honest even though I know a lot of my people will be against me for saying this.

If I have been harsh then I am sorry. I apologize for it, but the truth will never change, it is a matter of factuality.

Question is how much longer we want to deny it. As muslims we always knew the prophet married Ayesha(ra) when she was only 6. Yet we turned blind eye to it, never admitted it was pedophilia. Now whole Islamic world is in turmoil. Muslims have become terrorists. We have to ask what is wrong. Maybe it is somthing in Quran itself that is making them do this. So I studied Quran once again and saw things I never thought I will see. Will any God write such things in a holy book, always favoring the prophet?

Something is wrong. Couldnt it be that Muhammad was not prophet at all. Maybe he never got any revelaition. Nothing. He just pretended so hecould do all this, just like how the ex-muslims who already left Islam claim.

Anyway my journey to find the truth about Islam has started. I hope everyone will takes this journey independently to reach their own conclusion about the religion we are brought up in.

These are the allegation against our prophet. These are made by none other than muslims who have now left Islam after finding out that Muhammad cannot be prophet for various reasons.

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." Qur'an 9:29

Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. Qur'an 9:1

As for the thief, both male and female, cut off their hands. It is the reward of their own deeds, an exemplary punishment from Allah. Allah is Mighty, Wise." Qur'an 5:38

If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice. Qur'an 4:3

"O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her;- this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess;- in order that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." Qur'an 33:50

"And you know well the story of those among you who broke Sabbath. We said to them: "Be apes—despised and hated by all. Thus We made their end a warning to the people of their time and succeeding generation, and an admonition for God-fearing people." Qur'an 2:65

The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter. Qur'an 5:33

___________________________________________________________

No. This is not the work of the true God. A God wont say this in any holy book which is meant for whole of humanity. We muslims have to search for the true God with our open hearts. If we value truth and if we are sincere, insyallah, we will find the truth.

Contradiction: Qur'an 9:30 says the Jews and the Christians are idolaters, but Allah allows Muslim men to marry their women without converting to Islam. According to ibn Abbas, ‘I do not know of a bigger Shirk than her saying that Jesus is her Lord!’ This means that the Christian women are idolaters.

Qur'an 2:259 Allah caused a man to sleep for a century, then raised him up, and questioned the man how long he thought had been in sleep (in this verse Allah is directly speaking with an ordinary person).

Contradiction: Qur'an 42:51 says Allah speaks only through a veil or through a messenger.

Can there be so many contradictions in the word of God. No. By saying this is word of God we are cheapening God. God is not small. God is not little or weak to make such silly mistakes. God does not have favourites either. He/It wont choose prophets. If He wants he can easily convey his message to every single human being on earth without the need for an angels or prophets. Maybe the truth is that God never sent any prophets , or angels. He wants to know how we will behave without any revelation. Without any guidance how we will behave- that is the true test. And He also wants to know who is sincere in finding the truth. Maybe He will be very impressed with people who question things and find out the truth for themselves from all the falsehoods.
